Volunteers, who remain the sole organizers of the series, conceived of concerts as a means of bridging cultural gaps and building community in the surrounding neighborhoods in the 1980s. Coincidentally, the founders shared a love of jazz, America's original music form, and City Park Jazz at the historic Pavilion and bandstand was born.
